Our History

On May 6, 1970, a group of people met in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Ash for a Wednesday night prayer meeting. At this time the group voted to organize an Independent, Fundamental Baptist Church.

The next Sunday, May 10, Mother’s Day, 53 people met in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Hurst. This became the home of Bible Baptist Temple for the next five months. At a business meeting on May 13 the church voted to call Rev. Jack Gwinn as their pastor. The church charter was opened on August 12, 1970, and closed on October 13, 1970, with 32 charter members.

On September 27, 1970, the church met in the Quiet Dell School. The school was rented and used for services for the next eleven months. It was here that the church had its first wedding, probably the only wedding ever performed at the school.

The church purchased a house at 923 Cost Ave. in Stonewood on August 13, 1971. The house was renovated for use as a church.

The congregation continued to grow, and in January 1974 the church voted to purchase 3.6 acres on Rt. 58 just outside the city limits of Stonewood and 1/2 mile from the house. Ground was broken for the new building on March 3, 1974, with the men of the church doing most of the labor.

The first service held in the new building was on September 1, 1974. The congregation continued to grow, and ground was broken for another building in 1977. This second building, which had a full basement and a 450-seat auditorium, was completed in 1978, with the first service in this new building being held on July 13, 1978.

In November 1980 Pastor Gwinn was called to the pastorate at Averyville Baptist Church in Peoria, Illinois. Bible Baptist Temple called Dr. Kenneth Derrington as the new pastor, and he assumed his pastoral responsibilities in December 1980.

In 1983 another building was needed to provide Sunday school rooms. This building also had a bus garage for mechanical upkeep on the church vehicles. Dr. Derrington retired from the pastorate on his 75th birthday, November 19, 1997. In 2005, Pastor Derrington went home to be with his Saviour our Lord Jesus Christ.

On January 11, 1998, the church called veteran missionary, Charles V. Madaus, as their new pastor. He had served as an associate at Bible Baptist Temple under Pastor Derrington from May 1981 – February 1986 at which time he accepted the associate position at Good Shepherd Baptist Church in Moorsville, Indiana. In May 1988 he surrendered to the mission field of Kenya. He with his wife Kim, and daughter, Nicole left for Kenya on May 8, 1989. Their second child, Ashley, was born in Nairobi in 1990. The Madaus family served two four-year terms as missionaries and came home on furlough October 31, 1997. Forty-four people from our church have gone on to serve the Lord in Christian ministry.
